"When Christmas Comes Around" was written last Christmas when horrific images from Gaza filled the screens while the Christmas shopping season was in full swing back home. The contrast was both surreal and heartbreaking – and I wanted to write a song for everyone who doesn’t necessarily look forward to Christmas, for various reasons.
Personally, I’ve lost both my parents over the past four years, and Christmas is a time when the sense of loss becomes especially strong. I also think about others who have lost someone they love, and those who dread Christmas because it is marked by violence, substance abuse, or social exclusion. There are many sad stories out there, and we need to look after each other.
