    Girls in Airports

On March 23, 2023, Girls in Airports released their eighth studio album, How It Is Now, marking a new chapter for the band following their transition from a quintet to a quartet in 2020. This change in lineup has opened up more space for each of the four musicians, resulting in a tighter, more unified sound that reflects the band’s evolution. The album showcases a more imaginative, melodic, and dynamically varied approach than ever before, capturing where the band finds itself today. How It Is Now is a testament to the band’s exploration of lighter, more expansive sounds, with each track embracing endless possibilities. The album is centered on themes of courage—specifically, the courage to be authentic, to stand firm in one’s own identity, and to create space for oneself to exist freely. The music is full of undeniable melodies, infectious grooves, and beautiful moments that are emotionally captivating. While the album may not be flawless, it reaffirms Girls in Airports’ place at the forefront of modern Danish jazz. The group continues to blend indie-jazz with a wide range of genres, creating music that resonates deeply with listeners around the world. A unique aspect of the album’s creation was the process behind selecting its final tracks. The band invited a select group of listeners to hear 15 tracks prior to mixing and mastering, and based on their reactions, the final nine tracks were chosen. This refreshing, anti-elitist approach brings a sense of collaboration and openness to the album, which flows effortlessly for 45 minutes with few missteps. Standout tracks like “Plants” revisit themes from their debut album and reimagine them with stunning effect, while “Cabin” weaves together influences from electronic pioneers like Boards of Canada, creating moments of raw beauty and introspective calm. Other highlights include “Curtain of Life,” with its blend of melancholy and hope, and “Sachette,” which subtly jazzes with a delicate saxophone melody that lingers long after the track ends. While some tracks, such as “Ember” and “18,” may not reach the same heights as others, How It Is Now is, at its core, a remarkable achievement for the band. It reflects a group that remains unafraid to evolve and explore new sonic landscapes, all while staying true to their signature sound. This album captures a band in transition—boldly moving forward, and inviting their listeners to experience the journey with them. How It Is Now is not just a collection of songs; it’s a document of where Girls in Airports are today, standing confidently on their own path.

Next Wednesday: Opening Concert of Our Festival!

On Wednesday, October 30th at 7:30 PM, we’re kicking off our festival with an extraordinary evening of music that blends the timeless beauty of Schubert with the soulful sound of Danish singer-songwriter Guldimund.

    Part I // SCHUBERT

We’ll begin with Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in G major, D.887, performed by yours truly!

    Part II // GULDIMUND

In the second half, we’re thrilled to present a special collaboration with Guldimund (Asger Nordtorp Pedersen), who has captured hearts with his poetic songwriting and haunting melodies. Accompanied by Arendse Nordtorp Pedersen on violin, Mathæus Bech on bass and Villads Hoffmann on cittern. We even get to play along for a few tunes which we’re very excited about.

Guldimund, whose latest album “Jeg venter i lyset” earned him awards for both Album and Single of the Year at the GAFFA Awards, brings his deeply personal sound to this unique concert.

This is a rare chance to experience the fusion of classical and contemporary music in a powerful live performance. 🎟️ Get your tickets now and join us for an unforgettable night of music here.

    90 %

Someone recently asked us where and how we do most of our creative work. The answer? Well, it might surprise you: 90% of our creativity happens in cars and hotel rooms.

There’s something oddly inspiring about a 4-hour drive—just the four of us, packed in a car, surrounded by music and ideas. Those long stretches on the road can be incredibly productive. And hotel nights? Our “parties” are a mix of fun and focused work. No distractions, nowhere to go—just the four of us, a bottle of something nice, and the music.

It’s in these moments, far from any stage or studio, there is room for new ideas and music...

The Mystery of the Forgotten Suitcase

Tucked away in our practice room sits an old, mysterious suitcase that’s become a bit of a legend among us. Inside? Physical tapes of an album that never saw the light of day.

Fifteen years ago, we packed up and traveled to the English countryside, settling into a grand house with two sound engineers to record something truly special. And yet, since that magical time, the tapes have just been… sitting there, waiting for their moment.

We’ve been talking about doing something with this old and forgotten treasure. However the thought of listening to it after all these years is a frightening one!

The suitcase is still there in our studio. Every day we look at it. Maybe it’s finally time to open it up and see what’s inside… 👀

    Songs - live

We call our releases songs, even though there are no vocals, because it's the instruments talking to each other. We are always talking together, and that's why it never gets boring. It's like a dance.
Here is a live session from the iconic Copenhagen venue Vega.

The innovative often lies next to something that is awkward

Somebody asked how we work, and it made us talk about how the innovative is often right next to something very awkward. When we're in the studio, we often take inspiration from the legendary Rick Rubin – working until everyone is truly satisfied. It’s not always easy, though. Sometimes, we end up in a creative ditch, where one of us has to give in, but we push through. Not that it's a huge drama; it’s more about going a bit further until the music feels right for all of us. 🎶

We’ve learned that creativity is a process, and sometimes, you just take turns being dissatisfied – but that’s where the magic happens. ✨
